Creating a website can look easy, but there is much more too it than you may think. It is so important to think everything through before you make any decisions.
A web page is an electronic document written in a computer language called HTML, short for Hypertext Markup Language. Each web page has a unique address, called a URL or Uniform Resource Locator that identifies its location on the network.
A website has one or more related web pages, depending on it's design. Web pages on a site are linked together through a system of hyperlinks. Hyperlinks enable you to jump between pages by clicking on a links.
Your Home or Index Page...
When you browse the internet, you will see the term home page often. Your home page or index page is the starting point of a website. Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page usually provides information regarding what you'll find in the website. A website can have one page or many pages. If there isn't a lot of information, the home page may be the only page but a website usually includes at least a few others.
Web pages vary greatly both in design and content, but many use a traditional magazine or newspaper format. At the top of the page is a masthead or banner graphic, then a list of items, such as articles, often with a brief description. The items in the list usually link to other pages on the site, or to other sites. Sometimes these links are highlighted words in the body of the text, or are arranged using a top or side "menu" bar. They can also be a combination of both. A web page may also have images that link to other content or pages.
How can you identify a link? Text links appear in a different color from the rest of the text. They are often blue and sometimes underlined, but can be set to anything you choose. When you move your cursor over a text link or over a graphic link, it will change from an arrow to a hand. The hypertext words often say what you will link to.
When you return to a page with a link you've already visited, the hypertext words will often be in a different color, so you know you've already been there. But you can certainly go there again. Don't be surprised though, if the next time you visit a page it looks different and the information has changed. To encourage visitors to return to a site, some web publishers update pages often. That's what makes browsing the Web so informative and interesting.
Developing an effective website requires thoughtful planning. Understanding the entire process before you begin will save you time and money as the project progresses. Think everything through. Although sites range from just a page or two, to more complex ones with hundreds or thousands of pages and sophisticated interactive features, the development process remains basically the same.
